Edith ‘Wantee’Thomas: ‘I was his friend and his companion to the very last’ .

Schwitters: ’My friend Wantee helps me very much. It is due to her that I am still alive’
The most important person in the last years of Schwitters’ life was Edith Thomas, whom he nick-named ‘Wantee’, as she was always popping in and saying ‘want tea?’.

They had already met in 1941 in London, where he lived with his son Ernst and his daughter-in-law Esther in a small two bed-roomed flat.

During the years that followed, she constantly looked after him.

In 1944, Schwitters received the news that his wife Helma had died and, in the summer of the following year, he moved with Wantee to Ambleside where he spent the rest of his life.
