Our project, outline of the artgeographical research>

< back

In the past we tried to visit the site of the barn on a few occasions but each attempt was thwarted by a closed gate.
We had also seen the wall in the Hatton Gallery which looked forlorn in its forgotten corner.
We sought out eye witnesses of the time and with the information they provided we visited various places and explored in depth manifold sources of information regarding Kurt Schwitters: his work, his background and his purposes in England.

The core questions of our research were:

- What was the exact route travelled by the wall from
  Elterwater to Newcastle?

- How was the wall moved?

- Why was its removal necessary?

- What is the current state of the two sites: the barn
without a wall (Elterwater) and the wall without its
  barn (Newcastle)?

- What significance do they have now?

- Are there any plans in the offing for their
  reunification?
